Astana Proteam leader Fabio Aru did a very strong race and finished 22nd, 1 minute and 16 seconds behind the fastest time of the stage 20 winner Maciej Bodnar. This result allowed Aru to hold his 5th place in the general classification of the Tour de France.
- Today, I gave my all to reach the highest possible result. The route of the time trial was quite technical and fast, I was able to do it on the good level. After the Alpine stages because of the illness I lost some important seconds, so it was hard to fight for the podium. Anyway, in general, I can be happy with what I have now. Of course, I wanted to get more in this Tour de France, but taking in account my bronchitis, I am confident that I am high in the GC. Besides, I won a very nice stage and for a few days worn the yellow jersey – that was something absolutely great. I have some very nice impressions from this edition of the Tour. Now I know, that I can reach in the Tour de France something bigger, – said Fabio Aru.
Chris Froome without big problems protected his yellow jersey, finishing 3rd in today’s time trial and increasing his GC lead up to 54 seconds.
Colombian rider Rigoberto Uran after a strong performance today in Marseille moved up to second place in the overall (+0.54), while Romain Bardet moved down to third position (+2.20).
The final, 21st stage of the Tour de France 2017 will be held tomorrow: traditionally, the peloton will come to Paris to play the final stage victory on the Champs-Élysées.
