- That was my first uphill finish since I came back in racing and, of course, it was a difficult one. I felt pretty good on the climbs, but honestly, I missed some racing rhythm. When the rivals attacked on the last climb, I tried to follow them and later to do the climb regularly. I was close to catch the group in front, but every time I was almost there, new attack was creating a new distance between them and me. Anyway, I am quite happy with the stage. It was a good test for me, which shows I worked really good last months. Still many important stages are ahead. Let’s see, what will happen, - said Miguel Angel Lopez.
Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse started in the downtown of Bern and ended atop 10 km long climb in Villars-sur-Ollon with the whole distance of 143,2 km.
A break of 4 riders broke clear almost in the first few kilometers of the race and only one rider of them, American Larry Warbasse was able to stay in front until the finish line, taking the stage victory.
A group of 6 favorites did the decisive move on the final climb, while Miguel Angel Lopez tried to follow them. Astana rider was very close to the favorites during the last 5 km and finished with just 27 seconds behind Italian Damiano Caruso, who led the GC contenders group to the finish.
Also, Pello Bilbao did a very solid race taking 11th place and finishing 54 seconds behind the favorite’s group.
Caruso became the new overall leader of the Suisse race, while Lopez and Bilbao moved up significantly in GC to 10th and 12th places, respectively.
Stage 5 will be held tomorrow from Bex to Cevio with the total distance of 222 km. It will be the longest stage of this edition of the Tour de Suisse.
