For Astana leaders, Miguel Angel Lopez and Pello Bilbao it was a stage to get back the racing rhythm and to try to be in front in the final. Both riders did it well, staying in front almost the whole day and finishing in the main group.
Pello Bilbao was the rider, who did a strong attack in the final of the race, trying to anticipate the massive sprint. It was a brave try, but the stage ended with the bunch sprint, won by Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert.
- Honestly, already yesterday I felt quite good. My legs were ok and I felt like I had a good recovery after the Giro d’Italia. Today everything went ok, especially on the climbs. On the final circuit I supported Miguel Lopez, was ready to help him in case of necessity. But, he was ok, so I decided to try something in the last km. I could stay safety in the group and maybe to get a Top-10 spot in the sprint, but I wanted something more. This was the reason, I attacked in the end, trying to surprise the sprinters. I just wanted to fight for a stage victory, not for a placement. So, it failed this time, but the race just started. Hope, more chances are still to come, - said Pello Bilbao.
Stefan Kung of Switzerland is the new overall leader. Pello Bilbao is 33rd.
Tomorrow will be held the third stage of the race: 159,3 km from Menziken to Bern.
