The fourth stage of the Corsa Rosa ended on the Etna Volcano at almost 2000 meters on the sea level. The Astana Pro Team guys promised to try everything to demonstrate the value of the Team at this Giro and did a solid performance.
The Sicilian Paolo Tiralongo tried to attack at the beginning of the final climb but the peloton didn’t concede space. Then it was the turn of the Spaniard Pello Bilbao who tried to follow Rolland. Then, when all the attackers were taken back, it was our Danish rider, the young Jesper Hansen, who tried two times (at 3 km and at 1.5 km to go) but he was regained both times by the GC contenders.
On the final sprint for the third position, our Dario Cataldo was brilliant and was beaten only by Thomas and Pinot, concluding the stage in 5th position at 29 secs from the winner.
“We promised we wanted to do a good team's perfomance and we did it – commented Cataldo after the stage – unfortunately the break had a big gap before the last climb because Tiralongo wanted to attack before the start of the climb itself at 25 km to the finish line.”
“With that big gap it was not a good thing to attack because the bunch was pushing hard on the pedals to try regained the attackers… then in the final Hansen felt good and did a couple of good action – continued Cataldo – on our side, either me and Kangert, we tried to do as good as possible in the final sprint, even because the wind blew strongly in our faces… at least I think we did a good race today.”
The fourth stage of the Giro has been won by the Slovack Jan Polanc, who entered in the first breakaway of the day and was able to keep a small advantage on the bunch.
Tomorrow, fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia, from Pedara to Messina (159 km), suitable for the sprinters.
