The 2017 edition of the Tour of the Alps has concluded today in Trento with our Michele Scarponi 4th in the GC, at 27 secs from the winner.
The Astana Pro Team ended the five days race between Italy and Austria with one stage victory (Scarponi in Innsbruck), several attacks (mostly Cataldo, Scarponi and Chernetckii) and some good placements by Luis Leon Sanchez (4th yesterday in Cles).
“I’ve tried even today on Bondone and also on the last ascent (Novaline) of this Tour of the Alps – commented Scarponi – unfortunately I’ve found on my way strong rivals that were able to keep me down from the final podium but I have to congratulate with them.”
“The next race is the Giro d’Italia – continued the Italian of the Astana Pro Team – where I will be the leader of the Team (after the injury of Fabio Aru) I’m curious and confident because we did a very good training preparation until now and this five days race was exactly what I needed about to do a little step more.”
“We concluded a race where we did pretty good – commented the sport director Alexander Shefer – that is a positive sign looking at the Giro d’Italia that will start in two weeks… I think Scarponi did a solid performance, winning one stage and fighting with the GC contenders every day and the Team in general did a good performance considering also the difficult weather conditions of the first stages.”
The Tour of the Alps has been won by the British Geraint Thomas who has beaten the French Thibaut Pinot (winner of today’s last stage) and the Italian Domenico Pozzovivo.
