In the fall, Michael hit his head and face, and got some brushes to the right arm and leg. Immediately after the crash Valgren was sent to the hospital of the city of Huy for detailed medical research. A computer tomography has been held as well as a few stitches have been applied.
Fortunately, the research did not reveal any fracture or other serious injuries.
Before the crash as well as after it Astana Proteam tried to do an active race: team’s leaders Jakob Fuglsang and Tanl Kangert always stayed in front of the pack supported by Michael Valgren, Andriy Grivko, Nikita Stalnov and other teammates.
- Unfortunately, this heavy crash happened and it had a big impact over team’s strategy in the race. We hope, Michael will get well soon. We were lucky, he did not get too serious consequences after this fall. But, anyway, it was not the only bad luck for us in this race. With more or less 20 km to go Tanel Kangert got a flat tire. Andriy Grivko provided him his rear wheel and Tanel tried his best to come back in the peloton. But, it was a bad moment, since the peloton increased the pace significantly starting a hard chase of the break. So, it was really impossible for Kangert to come back. It is a pity, because he felt very good today and was motivated to fight for a strong result, - explained Lars Michaelsen.
The winner of the race for the fourth time in a row became Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde. Jakob Fuglsang was the best Astana performer with 22nd position.
This Sunday, on April 23rd Astana Proteam will close this year Ardennes week with the monumental classic race Liège – Bastogne – Liège.
