The third stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco presented the firsts climbs of this year edition of the race and the difficult stage profile promoted many attacks, since the initial kms.
One of the promoter of the most important break has been our Danish rider, Jakob Fuglsang, who was also the last, together with the Italian De Marchi, to be regained from the peloton, less than 20 km to the finish line.
“We said in this morning meeting that we had to try to enter in some actions – commented the sport director Martinelli after the stage – Jakob decided to enter in that breakaway and he did pretty good, keeping a good advantage until the final…”
“Then the speed in the narrow final to Donostia increased so much, even because as always the level here is so high – continued the Italian Sport Director – the breakaway didn’t have much luck but we were at the front with Sanchez and Chernetckii, who are 8th at 18th at just 3 seconds in the GC… let’s see what will come in the next days.”
Today’s stage has been won by the Spaniard, David De La Cruz, who is also the new GC leader.
Tomorrow, the fourth stage of this Pais Vasco will present 174.1 km, from Donostia to Bilbo, with the climb to Vivero that will end at only 14 km to go: it could be a good day for a breakaway.
