The second stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco has ended in Eltziego and saw a final bunch sprint with the victory of the Swiss, Michael Albasini.
Our Spaniard rider, Luis Leon Sanchez, fought to keep the front positions in the last few km of the stage but then he concluded in 17th position, immediately behind his team mate, the other Spaniard, Pello Bilbao who was 16th.
“Even today has been an unusual easy stage in the Pais Vasco – commented the sport director Alexander Shefer – normally, this race is famous for the extremely difficult profile of every stage… on the contrary, this year we did these two firsts stages very suitable for the fastest riders.”
“We can say that tomorrow will start the real ‘Pais Vasco’ with the stage that will end in Donostia (San Sebastian) that presents 7 climbs in the race route, the last one of which will end at 7 km to the finish line – continued the Kazakh sport director – I think we will race day by day, trying to the best possible from every stage, avoiding to pay too much attention in the GC positioning.”
The third stage of the 2017 edition of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco, from Gasteiz to Donostia is 160,5 km long and will have several climbs: there could be a good selection between the strongest climbers and Grand Tour riders.
