Cold and bad wheather have obliged the organizers of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya to postpone the start of today’s stage at the km 56 of the original race route, at Le Seu d’Urgeil.
With the new stage profile, the only important climb of the stage was the Turó del Puig, that ended at just 14 km to the finish line.
In this climb, precisely at 16 km to go there has been the attack of the Astana Pro Team, with Paolo Tiralongo bringing the team mates at the front of the bunch and then Dario Cataldo and Jakob Fuglsang promoting a very spectacular duo breakaway.
Unfortunately the bunch didn’t give much space to the attackers and at 14.5 km to go the Danish Fuglsang remained alone at the front for few hundreds of meters, before being reabsorbed from the peloton at the begin of the descent.
“After a good TTT few days ago, we were not happy about how it went yesterday in La Molina – explained Dario Cataldo after the finish – for this reason we started the stage fully motivated to do as good as possible… we tried with Jakob to surprise the rivals and take the final descent with a small gap that could have meant much.”
“Unfortunately, the bunch kept us very close and our attack didn’t give the hoped effect – explained the Italian of the Astana Pro Team – on the other hand, I’m quite satisfied because I see my condition is growing and this race give every day some opportunity to attack… let’s take it day by day!”
Tomorrow the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya presents the fifth stage from Valls to Lo Port (Tortosa), 182 km with a difficult uphill final that should suit at the best for the pure climbers.
