This afternoon in Calella the 2017 edition of the Volta a Catalunya has started: the first stage had in the race route program some hills but the bunch gained the finish line compact and ready for a mass sprint.
The victory has gone to the Italian Davide Cimolai who has beaten the French, Nacer Bouhanni.
For the Astana Pro Team guys it was a stage of passage a part for the ambitions of one of the most expert riders of the bunch: Paolo Tiralongo, at his 18th year as a pro, wanted to try to attack in the winding final kms.
“I had very good feelings when at only 4 km to go I’ve felt a flabby tire in the rear – commented Tiralongo after the stage – we are here to do as better as possible with our captain Jakob Fuglsang but, of course, if any occasion will come to us, we will try to take it!”
“Tomorrow we will have this important team time trial very long, 41.3 km, and very influencing for the GC battle – continued the Italian – we will try to do our best to keep the captain in the top athletes of the Volta a Catalunya.”
The first classified today for the Astana Pro Team was the Italian Dario Cataldo, 18th.
Tomorrow, second stage, the team time trial: Pla de l'Estany (Banyoles - Banyoles) 41.3 km long.
