In the race held on the Bahrain International Circuit Bizhigitov took third podium place in the sprint from a small leading group of 12 riders.
- I am happy with my performance today. I am not a sprinter, but in the final I tried to do my best, so the bronze medal is a good result for me! Also, it is really nice to reach such a strong result in a jersey of Kazakhstan National Team. We had a plan for today, but from the start the situation began to develop differently. Very early a strong group broke away and I was able to join it. With around three laps to go we realized that the peloton will never come back; the rivals started to attack one by one. I tried to attack as well, but later when the group caught me I decided to save some energy for the final and to prepare for the sprint. Finally, I took a bronze medal, that’s great! After Asian Championships I will have a small break and later will go to Belgium for a several classics races, - said Zhandos Bizhigitov.
The new Asian road race Champion became Korean rider Sanghong Park, silver medal took UAE rider Yousef Mohamed Mirza.
Bizhigitov became a part of 9-men breakaway, which went away on the first part of the distance. Later three more riders joined that group, including another Astana and Kazakhstan rider Daniil Fominykh.
Fominykh launched a powerful attack in the final kilometers, but was caught with only 300 meters to the finish line. Thus, everything in this race was decided in sprint.
It was a successful Asian Championships for Men’s National Team of Kazakhstan, represented by Astana Proteam riders: two gold medals in team and individual time trials as well as bronze medal in road race.
