Today, at the International circuit in Bahrain Kazakhstan Team, consisted of 6 Astana riders, won the gold medal of the team time trial (38,4 km) of the Asian Road Cycling Championships.
- The racing circuit was really hard: we had 6 km inside international circuit and 6 km outside with a lot of turns and corners. The cruical point was to hold the team working like a clock mechanism with every rider involved on 100%. I think, we succeded. We did a good race, saving all 6 riders until the finis line. I saw a good level of all riders, especially, Alexey Lutsenko, Dmitriy Gruzdev and Andrey Zeits. Lutsenko and Zeits come back to Europe for Paris - Nice, while Dmitriy will do ITT here in Bahrain. I am really happy with the team and our gold medal. It is nice to win this medal for Kazakhstan, but also, it is a good result for Astana Team in the beginning of the season, - said sports director Alexandr Shefer.
Zhandos Bizhigitov, Daniil Fominykh, Dmitriy Gruzdev, Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev, Alexey Lutsenko and Andrey Zeits have represented Kazakhstan National Team in Bahrain.
The National Team of Japan took the silver medal, loosing 1 minute to Kazakhstan. The bronze medal was taken by Hong Kong.
- I think, we did a very good race. We planned to start calmly, without stress and later to increase our pace depending of the situation in the race. Already in the first part of the distance we found ourselves with the best provisional time, so all we had to do – just to hold our high speed. This brought us the victory. Today we started very early, at 8.00, but the weather was good – not too hot and without wind. Anyway, the route was quite technical with a lot of turns. But we passed it well. I am happy with our success; first of all we won the gold medal for our country, in honor of the victory the flag of Kazakhstan was raised up. But besides, it is the first win for Astana Proteam in this season! So, I have another race here at the Championships – in two days I will take part in the individual time trial where I want to reach a good result too, - explained Dmitriy Gruzdev.
- Really happy with our result – it is a big pleasure to win the gold medal for Kazakhstan, for the team as well as for me personally. It is a great honor to represent Kazakhstan in any competition, while to win a medal – that’s amazing. We’ve spent a strong race; all guys did their best today. What a nice day! Now it is time to come back in Europe, where I plan to take part in the Paris – Nice, - said Alexey Lutsenko.
Astana Proteam riders will represent Kazakhstan National Team in other races of the Asian Road Cycling Championships too. Thus, on February 27th, Dmitriy Gruzdev will take part in the individual time trial.
