Astana Team did a very active race: Oscar Gatto became a part of a big breakaway group, while Luis Leon Sanchez was fighting for a strong result on the final climb.
The break with Oscar Gatto was neutralized with only 2,5 km to the finish line atop Alto da Malhão.
- In a moment of the race there was a situation when a big group of riders went away. So, I decided to join them. The peloton never gave us too much space, but anyway I always tried to be in front. I thought, I could help Luis Leon and other guys in case they come over our group. In general, I felt quite well today and I am happy with the way I’ve spent this stage. I hope to be ready for the next races in Belgium, - said Oscar Gatto.
At the last climb there were a number of attacks, but nobody of favorites could get any serious advantage. Finally, the winner of the stage became … from Portugal. Luis Leon Sanchez finished 8th, this result allowed him to reach 4th place in the final classification of the race.
- I think, this is not bad at all, but, of course, you always try to win. Today and during the whole week the team did a great job for me, we did our best in this race. Maybe, I missed some racing rhythm – most of my rivals did a few other races before this one. Anyway, I did a very productive training camp in Andorra and here in Portugal I’ve spent a nice week. So, I am pretty sure it will be possible to get something more in the next races, - explained Luis Leon Sanchez.
Slovenian rider Primož Roglič became the overall winner of the Volta ao Algarve.
Astana Proteam won the final team’s classification of the race.
