Despite strong wind during the day and hilly profile of the race, everything ended with the massive sprint, won by Colombian rider Fernando Gaviria. All Astana Proteam riders, including its leaders Luis Leon Sanchez and Jesper Hansen finished the stage in the main group without any problems.
- We have a few really hard stages in the mountains. So, we have a good, well balanced roster specially for the climbing stages. What why the main goal for today was to pass this stage without too much risk. The stage was calm and as it could be predicted, ended with the bunch sprint. Tomorrow, starts the most important part of the Volta ao Algarve. We are looking forward to it and ready for a strong fight, - said sports director Alexandr Shefer.
Tomorrow, will be held the second stage of the race – 189,3 km from Lagoa to Alto da Fóia, a first category climb.
