The first stage of the 2017 Tour of Oman has seen a bunch sprint finish with the victory of the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff.
This stage race, at his 8th edition, is an important step for the Astana Pro Team riders, some of them are preparing the Classics and the Asian Championship and some others are preparing the grand tours of the season.
Between the latter there is Fabio Aru, who will the captain of the Astana Pro Team at the Giro d’Italia.
Aru was also at his seasonal debut today: “It was a good stage – commented the Italian after the finish line – clearly suitable for the sprinters and a very good way to start.”
“In race was warm but not too much – explained Aru – as a Team we worked to avoid any risk and to 'put' some rhythm in our legs, let’s see how the race will develop in the next days…”.
The first classified of the Astana Pro Team was the strong young Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko, 14th in the final sprint.
Tomorrow, second stage from Nakhal to Al Bustan (145.5 km) with a quite challenging second part of the race route, characterized by some hills and an ‘explosive’ uphill final.
