Astana Proteam Danish rider Jakob Fuglsang did a strong race, finishing at 9th place, 1 minute and 13 seconds behind the stage winner, Colombian Nairo Quintana.
- It was a hard stage with 4000 meters of total altitude. But, honestly, yesterday as well as in other days it was not easy at all. The entire race turned out difficult, every day you have to give 100% to be in front. Indeed, today’s climb was my first racing uphill finish in the season. In general, these kinds of climbs, short and steep, don’t suit me well, but today I tried to do my best to check myself. The team did a good job during the day, until the very last kilometers I felt support of my teammates. Finally, I am happy with the way I did this race and with the result I was able to obtain. The main thing for me was to check my level after all that work that has been done on winter. I can say that I am satisfied. I believe, I am on the right way in my preparation for the main part of the season. I was able to ride strong on the final steep climb after a long and exhausting stage and this proves I worked really well on winter. Think, I still have some work to be done in next weeks, but in general everything is going as it was planned, - explained Jakob Fuglsang.
After stage 4 of the race Nairo Quintana became the new leader of the general classification, while Jakob Fuglsang thanks to today’s performance, moved up to 6th position in overall.
- Today, our team looked very good. We had a plan for this stage; the main thing was to help Jakob Fuglsang, but also, to support Michele Scarponi and Pello Bilbao. Not everything went as we hoped for Scarponi and Bilbao, but Jakob did well, showing a solid result. The final climb, but also the whole stage, was hard: a lot of climbs, not ideal weather conditions… But we passed it without problems. As result of this stage Jakob moved to 6th place in GC and I think, this is a nice performance for the moment. Day by day we are improving, so everything is going as it has to be at the start of the season, - added sports director Dmitri Sedoun.
The last stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will be held tomorrow: the peloton will pass 130,2 km from Paterna to Valencia.
