The last stage of the race was held in Dubai city, the peloton rode 124 km in the city center. Astana’s Dmitriy Gruzdev attacked from the peloton almost immediately after start, breaking away together with three more riders. Gruzdev did a very active race, winning one of intermediate sprints. Anyway, the peloton caught Gruzdev group with 9 km to go.
- It was a good day for us. We were motivated to do an active race. It was clear, in such a fast and short stage there were not too many chances for a break to reach the finish, but we wanted to show ourselves. So, our riders attacked in the beginning of the race: firstly, Zhandos Bizhigitov and Arman Kamyshev and later Dmitriy Gruzdev, who, finally, broke away together with three riders. He did a good race, won an intermediate sprint and was third in a second one. While, in the final it was Riccardo Minali, who finished third. Yes, it is not a victory, but in this race Riccardo showed his potential. Among almost all the best sprinters around the world he was really good, fighting for a good result. This tells a lot. I believe in the future he has a good chance to become a world-class sprinter, - explained Astana sports director Alexandr Shefer.
In the last few kilometers Astana Proteam did it best to provide Riccardo Minali a good position for the final sprint. 21-year-old Minali showed his sprinting skills, for the first time in his neo-pro career reaching a podium place – he finished 3rd. Another young rider of Astana Team Truls Korsaeth missed just a little to reach his first Top-10, he took 11th.
- I am happy with my result, really nice to take a podium place. My team did a great job during the whole day. In the final Ruslan Tleubayev led me perfectly until 1,5 km to go, helping to get a position for sprint. Later, I was able to find a good wheel and I passed well the final corner. I launched my sprint from Viviani’s wheel and took third place, - said Riccardo Minali.
German Marcel Kittel won the final stage as well as the general classification of the Dubai Tour. Riccardo Minali, thanks to his podium place in the final day, moved up to a solid 7th place overall. Besides, Minali became second in the youth classification of the Dubai Tour.
