He started the decisive individual time trial of 36.2 km to the top of the first category climb La Planche des Belles Filles with a goal to protect his third place in the general classification. But, giving his all on the road, Lopez lost too much time to his rivals and in the end of the day he moved down to the 6th place in the overall standings.
- It was a hard day for me, I did all I could, but I might admit that it was a bad day. Someone is always having to lose and today it was me who lost the race. Well, we have what we have. I did a good race, during all three weeks I was up there among the best riders, fighting for the podium and today I started aiming the podium, but it did not work out. I just missed one day to reach my goal. However, I am happy to be here at the final of my first Tour de France and tomorrow it will be nice to finish this amazing race in Paris, - said Miguel Angel Lopez.
The Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar showing a great performance today, won the individual time trial atop La Planche des Belles Filles, also, taking enough time on Primoz Roglic to move into the race lead: winning 1 minute 56 seconds on Roglic, Pogacar overpassed him in the general classification and took the yellow jersey with just one day to the end of the race in Paris.
The final 21st stage of the Tour de France will be held tomorrow: 122 km from Mantes-la-Jolie to Paris.
