The crash at the final part of the stage split the peloton in parts, cutting many riders from a small leading group which, finally, played the stage in a sprint, won by the French rider Bryan Coquard.
Unfortunately, Merhawi Kudus of Astana Pro Team was among the riders, who crashed down, but, he did not get any serious injury and finished the stage.
- First of all, we are happy to be here at the race and to restart the season! This is great. The first stage was really hard with hilly profile and many climbs, but also, it was hard due to extreme heat – today was around 40oC. It was not easy to survive today. Anyway, in general everything went well until the last kilometer when a big crash split the peloton in parts. Merhawi Kudus was involved, but looks like he is ok, avoided any serious injury. All other riders finished safety. We are looking forward to the next days here in France, - said Dmitri Sedoun, sports director of Astana Pro Team.
The second stage of La Route d’Occitanie will be held tomorrow: 174.5 km from Carcassonne to Cap Découverte.
