Astana Pro Team and its leaders train for unknown season start

While being in lockdown, the riders of Astana Pro Team are still training to be prepared for the upcoming but unknown season start, as many races have been cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 virus.
The team faced the change of a long-time planned race schedule. Astana's head coach Maurizio Mazzoleni and his colleagues worked relentlessly to renew the training schedule of the Astana Pro Team riders.

- All our plans have changed, as for everyone. Our current race calendar is still unknown, but we still have to train and be ready for any changes. Our riders will do one or two weeks of easy training just to stay active. As soon as the new race calendar will be defined, we will re-start to plan every rider’s personal training for their individual race days and also maybe another team training camp. The restrictions change from country to country, therefore some of our athletes are still able to go outside for a spin, while others have to train inside on our Tacx rollers or do some core training. Important is now, that we stay positive, it is how it is, and we are responsible for helping to flat the curve, – says Head Coach Maurizio Mazzoleni

- Currently, the world is ruled by the Coronavirus, everything is blurry and not sure if it takes place and when. In my opinion, the season will open again with the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour de Suisse, but we have to be sure it’s safe, as the public health is more important than anything else. However, our coaches and riders are in constant contact and train for the unknown comeback. I am happy that the team spirit is still high and that we handle this together, as a team, - says Team Manager Dmitriy Fofonov

- As for everyone, the current situation is tough, but we are all in this together. However, we have to try to stay positive and motivated. I am together with my family and enjoy the time with them, they are my biggest support and I am happy to have some extra time with them. After the cancellation of Strade Bianche, I took some days off, made some easy spins and recharged the batteries. Now I am doing easy trainings, because we don’t know the exact race dates. Of course, to do your training on a roller is different than going for a training ride on the road, but it is all about staying fit and moving your body. Also, our team and coaches are in contact with us and support us. I think, the most important thing now is, to keep the moral high and to make the best out of it. I think the family is for sure a very important part. Of course, it is a pity, that the Olympic Games have been postponed. It is the biggest and the most important sport event on an athlete’s calendar. I have been preparing for this event since the start of the year, but in this extraordinary situation we are all facing right now, I think it was the right decision, because the health and safety for everyone should be the priority. I hope everyone stays healthy and I am looking forward to seeing our fans soon out on the roads, – Jakob Fuglsang.

- Of course, in this difficult time we don’t have the possibility to train as we would like to do. We don’t have many options for trainings because the most part of the time you have to stay at home. Yes, I am using a bike trainer at home, but this is not the same thing as road trainings. In fact, staying hours and hours on the rollers you just keep your body in form, but do not improve. In this period of time the main thing is to keep your moral and motivation. You need your family staying next to you in these moments to support you and to give you additional motivation. In any case, this is the common situation for the whole world, everyone is facing the same situation. All we can do, is having faith, that the world will be able to overcome this, and we will see a light in the end of the tunnel soon, - said Miguel Angel Lopez.

- These days and weeks I tried to spend more time with my family. Luckily, everything is fine, and all are healthy. The whole world is going through a very difficult period, but we need to do everything possible to handle this. Of course, I continue to train and prepare for the races, which will start sooner or later. This is my job. Because of the current situation, I took a short break, I rested and recovered, both physically and mentally. In the last days, I slowly began to train more and more, I started with indoor home training, using our Tacx roller. For a few times, I’ve managed to go out on the road for short training sessions, observing all the precautions that require measures introduced in Europe. But, in general, I try to stay outside as short as possible – I only go out for the most necessary things, to the supermarket, for example. And the family stays always at home. Despite everything, I remain highly motivated and willing to train and prepare for the upcoming races. I do not give up and hope that everything will get better soon, - Alexey Lutsenko.
