- We wanted to have someone in the breakaway and Davide Ballerini joined a strong group in front. He did a very nice race, so me and Jakob Fuglsang could stay calmly in the main pack until the decisive phase. In the final I followed the attacks of the rivals, joining a new leading group. Well, I knew I have to do something to anticipate the sprint, so I made my move. I think it was a good one, I gave my all, but still missed a bit to win the race. It is a pity, because this is my last race in the season and I really wanted to finish it with a beautiful victory. However, it was a nice race and also Jakob showed he is in a great shape. I want to wish a good luck to our team in the last races of the season, especially at Il Lombardia. I am sure, that Jakob, but also Ion and Gorka Izagirre can do something good in this race! – said Luis Leon Sanchez.
The race of 197.8 km took its start in Saronno and shortly after it a group of 6 riders went away with Astana’s Davide Ballerini among the escapers. Ballerini did a very good and aggressive race, but the peloton never gave the breakaway too much space. Inside the last 30 km Ballerini, who was the last rider from the break to survive in front, has been caught back by the peloton. Later, after a number of attacks a new group of riders broke away, and Luis Leon Sanchez was there. He did a strong attack with 22 km to go, while Jakob Fuglsang remained behind in the group, following all attacks and trying to neutralize all attempts of the organized chasing. However, with 700 meters to go Sanchez was caught, while Fuglsang tried to counterattack. But the decisive move came from the side of Primoz Roglic, who attacked with 500 meters to the finish line, taking his second Italian classic win after Giro dell’Emilia last Saturday. Jakob Fuglsang finished 19th.
Astana Pro Team will continue racing in Italy with the 100th edition of the oldest classic race Milano-Torino.
