Being part of a seven-man-breakaway in today’s final, Hugo Houle showed the team colors at the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli, the second Italian classic of this weekend. But he and the other escapees got reeled in during the final local lap, and another breakaway was created without any Astana riders. This group made it to the finish line, with Sonny Colbrelli being the fastest rider of the select group, taking the win just in front of Alejandro Valverde and Jack Haig. Davide Ballerini was the first Astana rider to finish in the second group.
- I attacked to make the race hard for our leader Davide Ballerini. It was good for the team to have somebody at the front so we didn’t have to work on the front of the peloton. My goal was to save the legs from my teammates by racing aggressive and making it in the breakaway. Yesterday I was not feeling so well but today was good and I could do the work for the team, so I’m happy about that. We’re looking forward to the next Italian classics next week, - said Hugo Houle.
Racing in Italy continues on Tuesday with the Tre Valli Varesine.
