- The team performed well today and protected me into the final, with Dmitriy Gruzdev being still with me after a crash that caused a split in the peloton. I felt good, but in the final kilometers I got boxed in and was not able to deliver a sprint as I wanted. That’s too bad because I wanted to go for a good result here. Now all focus will be on Friday for E3 BinckBank Classic, we’re really motivated as a team to show ourselves here in Belgium, - said Davide Ballerini.
A group of six riders went clear after 6 kilometers of racing in Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne, the first spring classic in Belgium for Astana Pro Team. Even after several hard cobbled climbs and cobbled sections, the leaders never gained an advantage of more than 5 minutes. In the final 10 kilometers, at the moment everything got back together, there was a crash in the chasing peloton to split the bunch. From Astana Pro Team, Davide Ballerini and Dmitriy Gruzdev were able to stay in the first group of around 40 riders. This group made it a bunch sprint at the finish line, with Dylan Groenewegen finishing in front of Fernando Gaviria and Elia Viviani. Davide Ballerini finished twentieth.
