- A very difficult and nervous stage with a super hard route with narrow roads and always up and down. Anyway, our team passed it very well. It was our plan to have someone in the break, especially in such a dangerous break as today. And, it was nice to have Davide and Rodrigo there. In the final Bernal attacked first, and I understood it could be dangerous, so I immediately reacted with a counterattack. I could open a gap and continued pushing hard. Later, Rodrigo provided me a good help to catch the break in front. I did my best in the final, finished second. Not bad. Tomorrow is the decisive stage, will see, what we can do on the final climb, - said Miguel Angel Lopez.
A group with some dangerous for the general classification riders broke away at the first part of the stage together with two Astana Pro Team riders, Davide Villella and Rodrigo Contreras. Closer to the final climb of the day Alto La Union Villella came back to the main group, while Contreras continued working hard in front, making a few powerful attacks.
On the hardest part of the climb two riders went away from the early breakaway: Ivan Sosa and Daniel Felipe Martinez. This duo could take a good gap, but a bit later it was Miguel Angel Lopez, who counterattacked from the GC contenders group. Firstly, Lopez joined his teammate Rodrigo Contreras, who did an excellent job, leading out his captain for some time. Later, Astana’s leader joined Julian Alaphilippe and Richard Carapaz to create a chasing group, just behind the two leaders.
With a few kilometers to go after a super strong chase, Miguel Angel Lopez brought his group ahead to the leaders. Thus, this group of 5 riders played the stage victory in a sprint, won by Alaphilippe with Miguel Angel Lopez second and Carapaz third.
- Yeah, we started the day with a small problem as Hernando Bohorquez and Nikita Stalnov were involved in a massive crash. Fortunately, both avoided any serious injures and continued the race. Later, a group of 16 riders went away with Villella and Contreras among the escapers. The race was really hard and exhausting with 4 local laps and 2 climbs on each lap. All the guys did a perfect job today, both, in the break and in the main group. Miguel Angel was always in front. At the bottom of the last climb the break arrived with a good advantage, but later it was practically neutralized. Miguel Angel did absolutely fantastic attack and caught the leaders with the help of Rodrigo Contreras, who did a phenomenal stage today. In the final it was difficult for Miguel Angel to do something against Alaphilippe, but anyway, I can say that we can be happy with this stage and the result we made here, - added Stefano Zanini, sports director of Astana Pro Team.
After stage 5 Alaphilippe became the new overall leader while Miguel Angel Lopez moved up to 3rd position, 23 seconds behind.
The last and the most difficult stage 6 of the Tour Colombia 2.1 will be held tomorrow: the riders will face a 173,8-km-long distance from El Retiro to the top of the first category climb Alto de las Palmas (2519 meters above sea, 15.5 km, 6.7%).
