- Today was a hard day, as expected. The team worked a lot in the front, they did a very good job. We controlled the race and because of this, I was able to respond on every attack in today’s final. In the end, we’re happy that I was able to remain the GC leader. Another hard day tomorrow, but we will try our best to win the general classification.- said Gorka Izagirre.
A hard day for the riders, as they had to climb the Col le Brulat five times in the 181.1 kilometers of stage 3. Just after the start, a breakaway was formed but they got caught on the final local lap, because of great teamwork of Astana Pro Team at the front of the bunch. From that point, it was up to the GC riders to prove themselves.
Race leader Gorka Izagirre was able to respond on every attack in the final 15 kilometers of the race. In the final kilometers, a group behind the ten leaders caught the leading group and the sprint of the strongly reduced bunch ended in a victory of Phillipe Gilbert and a 5thplace for Gorka Izagirre. With just one day to go, Gorka Izagirre has a 2 seconds advantage on Thibaut Pinot and Tony Gallopin.
Tomorrow’s stage 4 will start in Avignon and after 162.2 kilometers of racing and climbing three 3rdcategory climbs, they will finish this stage race in Aix-en-Provence.
