- The first real race of this season after yesterday’s ITT for me. It was a hard day with a difficult final, because of the steep climb before the finish. At this final climb, it was all about trying to stay in the front of the race so I would make it into the first group that could fight for a stage victory. In the final, I tried to stay clear, but in the end, I finished third and took some bonification seconds. Of course, I would’ve liked to win but I’m happy that I’m now the race leader. I hope the next two days will be hard again because the feeling is good. We’ll see day by day what we can do to defend the lead,- said Gorka Izagirre.
During the 191.6 kilometers from Istres to La Ciotat, a group of four riders formed the day’s breakaway. But when the already reduced peloton started with the final climb, everything was back together, and the race exploded. After a lot of attacks during the climb, a select group of 7 riders remained at the front of the race.
In the final kilometers, everything was still together after multiple attacks. In the sprint, it was Gorka Izagirre how finished just behind winner Eduard Prades and Tony Gallopin. Izagirre is now leading the race, just 2 seconds in front of Gallopin.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 will start in Aubagne and finish in Le Castellet after 181.1 kilometers of racing.
