- Once again, today we tried to do an aggressive and tough race for the rivals; we protected Ion Izagirre and tried to find a possibility for him to take some seconds from Boasson Hagen. In the final we still had many good sprinters in the group, so at the last corner I just tried to surprise the rivals doing a smart move in front. It did not work, but I am happy with my sensations today, I am improving day by day. After coming back from Australia it took time to recover, so in the first day at the individual time trial I did not feel really good. But yesterday and today I felt like I am coming back into good shape. Tomorrow is a day for the general classification riders, we are ready to do a strong race, - said Luis Leon Sanchez.
It was another day, when Astana Pro Team took the responsibility in the race, working in front of the peloton and controlling and chasing the breakaway. When the early escapers were caught just at the bottom of the final climb (Salto de la Mora, 5.4 km, 4.5%, 3rd category), some riders tried to attack from the main group, but all the favorites stayed together until the very last kilometer.
It was Luis Leon Sanchez, who tried to anticipate the final sprint, attacking inside the last two corners. At the final straight Sanchez was overpassed by the Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet and the European champion Matteo Trentin, taking a solid third place. As result of the stage Sanchez took the lead in the combined classification. Astana leads in team classification.
The third stage (Quart de Poblet – Chera, 191 km) did not introduce any big changes in the general classification: the Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen still leads the race, Ion Izagirre of Astana Pro Team is second (+0.05), while another rider of the Kazakh team Pello Bilbao is 5th (+0.12).
The queen, 4th stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will be held tomorrow: 188 km from Vila-Real to Alcala-Alcocebre.
