Today’s stage with start and finish in Alicante was one for the sprinters, as the climbs were not hard enough to drop any of the main contenders for the bunch sprint. Astana Pro Team set up a high pace on the climbs, but in the end, everything was back together for a final sprint. Matteo Trentin was the fastest sprinter of the day, Edvald Boasson Hagen remains the overall leader with Ion Izagirre still close behind on 5 seconds, Pello Bilbao sixth on 12 seconds.
- We have spent a good day today. We had an option with Magnus Cort, but for this, we knew we have to be more active. With 40 km to go, we tried to increase the pace and to do a selection in the group. Unfortunately, the hills were not really selective to drop the sprinters, but anyway we tried, we worked well as a team. At the end of the day we still saved our second place of Ion Izagirre, also Pello is 6th now, we have the combined jersey and lead in the team classification. So, we keep on fighting in this race,- said sports director Dmitri Sedoun.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 from Quart de Poblet to Chera (191 kilometers) will be a more challenging one, with 6 categorized climbs with the final one in the final kilometers of the stage.
