A breakaway of three riders took off in the first part of today’s Stage 1 in Tour de l’Ain. But the peloton was in control of this group, and while the peloton was heading for a sprint final the three riders were caught.
In the final kilometers, the riders of Astana Pro Team took the lead in the high paced bunch with a lead-out of four riders to prepare the sprint for Ruslan Tleubayev. But in the final kilometres, only Hugo Houle was still in front of Tleubayev. In the final sprint, the top 10 got out of the wheel of Tleubayev to sprint for the podium. Ruslan Tleubayev finished 14th.
- At the end, Ruslan Tleubayev didn’t have the legs to sprint for the podium. We worked hard to get him in the right position, but once we got him there he was not able to follow the other sprinters. Nevertheless, we still have two stages left here at Tour de l’Ain where we have chances for our leader Yevgeniy Gidich,- said sport director Bruno Cenghialta after the finish.
Tomorrow’s Stage 2 will be similar to a race like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, with a lot of climbs and a challenging finish. The riders race from Saint-Trivier-de Courtes to Arbent in 150.9 kilometers.
