- The stage was really hard with two difficult climbs. Actually, it was the only one climb, but passed twice from both sides. The first side was a bit harder, while another one was quite fast with a very steep final. I felt good and today I had a very strong support from all my teammates, especially from Zhandos Bizhigitov, who was next to me until the very last phase of the stage. Also, in the final Ruslan Tleubayev, who was in the breakaway, provided me some help. The final climbing was very fast with a few teams pulling really hard to do a big selection. It was not easy to stay with pure climbers, but I managed to do it. Several riders behind me in the overall classification tried to attack in the last kilometers, but I gave my all to stay up there in front and, finally, everything went well. I am really happy with my current third place in the general classification. That’s nice result for me. Tomorrow we will have the final stage with a tough finish, but we are motivated to do it good, - explained Yevgeniy Gidich.
Stage 5 of the Tour of Croatia has been held today between Rabac and Poklon (156,5 km). The stage route was characterized by four climbs with a final 15-km tough climbing. A few riders of the daily breakaway were able to stay in front of the race until the finish and to play the stage victory: the Italian Manuele Boaro took the stage after a solo attack with only 500 meters to go. The Polish rider Lukasz Owsian was second, while another Italian and yesterday’s winner Alessandro Tonelli did third.
Yevgeniy Gidich stayed in the favorites group during all final climbing, trying to attack for several times inside the last three kilometers. Finally, the Astana rider finished 11th, 54 seconds behind the stage winner and just 6 seconds behind two leaders of the general classification, Pieter Weening and Kanstantsin Siutsou.
With only one stage to go Yevgeniy Gidich is keeping his third place in the overall, 53 seconds behind the current leader Siutsou. Two other Astana riders, Artyom Zakharov and Daniil Fominykh are at 23rd and 25th places, respectively.
Gidich has a comfortable advantage in the best young rider classification (white jersey).
The final 6th stage of the Tour of Croatia will be held tomorrow: 151,5 km from Samobor to Zagreb.
