In the third monument of the year, Paris-Roubaix, Truls Korsaeth showed everyone where he’s capable of by riding in the group of favorites for a long time going into the day’s final. Because of a crash just in front of him, before one of the final cobble sections, he was not able to stay in this group, finishing 33rd at the iconic finish line in the velodrome of Roubaix. Other riders of Astana Pro Team suffered in multiple crashes and mechanics, with the day’s leader Magnus Cort leaving the race early due to a crash, luckily without major injuries. Today’s winner was world champion Peter Sagan, finishing before Silvan Dillier and Niki Terpstra.
- Today was fun, it really was a fantastic race with an amazing atmosphere. I felt good during the day and I was feeling confident riding in the first group. That’s why I’m disappointed that I was just behind a crash going into the final, because I was not able to return in this first group. After all it was a good experience, that I can use in the years to follow, - told Truls Korsaeth.
In a sunny Compiégne, the riders took off for one of the most challenging races of the calendar: Paris-Roubaix. After a fast start with multiple breakaways who were not able to create a big gap with the high paced peloton, the first cobblestone section after 90 kilometers was the first obstacle the riders had to conquer. And right at this section, there was a big crash in the middle of the peloton. Magnus Cort was not able to avoid the crash at the slippery cobblestones, he crashed and quit the race with several bruises and scratches. Also Ruslan Tleubayev went down in this crash, he quit the race after he tried to get back in one of the first groups.
At the end, this crash was decisive for Astana Pro Team, as only Truls Korsaeth made it in the select group of riders in the front of the race. From this group, the winner Peter Sagan attacked after a breakaway was chased down. At that point, Truls Korsaeth already missed contact with the group because of a crash just in front of him before one of the decisive cobble sections. Korsaeth finished in a group of three riders, finishing second, at a 33rd place. Peter Sagan was the fastest in the final sprint with Silvan Dillier. Niki Terpstra finished behind this duo on a third place.
- We had a lot of bad luck today, with several crashes and mechanics. Magnus Cort, Ruslan Tleubayev and Dmitriy Gruzdev crashed today, Hugo Houle and Laurens de Vreese had mechanics. A good thing about today is that Truls Korsaeth showed himself, riding a strong race until he missed contact with the group of favorites because of a crash just in front of him. It has been a great experience for him and a good result, - told sport director Lars Michaelsen.
