- We had a plan to go in a break, because there is always a possibility that some riders could stay in front until the finish. So, finally, I was able to go away. We had a good group of riders there, working pretty well. There were a few intermediate sprints, I won one of them, and in another one I was second, taking some bonuses. In the final there was a strong wind, so the peloton started to control us pretty good. On the last climb of the day I came back to the group to save some energy and to finish safely in the peloton. It was important for the team to have a rider high in the GC for the next days. So, I can be happy with my race today, now we are looking forward to the next stages, - said Andriy Grivko.
Six riders, including Andriy Grivko went away from the peloton in the first kilometers of the race. The break worked hard to stay in front with around 3-4 minutes of advantage. Anyway, on the final climb Port de Collsacreu the last riders of the break were caught. Later, the stage was decided in the bunch sprint, won by the Colombian rider Jose Alvaro Hodeg, who out-sprinted Sam Bennett and Jay McCarthy.
Thanks to the bonus seconds, won at the intermediate sprints, Andriy Grivko moved into third place of the overall classification, 5 seconds behind Hodeg.
Stage 2 of the race will be held tomorrow: 175,6 km from Mataró to Valls with a third category climb with just 10 km to go.
