With some climbs and strong wind on the first part of the race there was a possibility to try to avoid the final sprint on the flat roads of Fano. Astana Team launched at attack on the slopes of 5-km long Offagna climb, splitting the peloton in parts. But, shortly after crossing the top of the climb, the group came back together.
- We tried to invent something in this stage, making the race harder on the first part. But, the climbs were not hard enough as well as the wind did not influence the race too much. So, finally, there was a massive sprint. In the final part of the race there were many crashes in the peloton, but, fortunately, our riders were not involved. At the moment, we lead in the team classification and tomorrow we will try to do our best in the time trial, - said sports director Alexandr Shefer.
The German Marcel Kittel won the stage in a bunch sprint, Peter Sagan was second, while Maximiliano Richeze finished third. Alexey Lutsenko was 30th.
There were not any changes in the general classification: Michal Kwiatkowski still leads the race, Miguel Angel Lopez and Alexey Lutsenko are at 16th and 17th places.
Astana Pro Team keeps the lead in the overall team classification of the Italian race.
The final stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico will be held tomorrow: it will be a traditional 10-km long individual time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto.
