- Hard stage, another one after yesterday efforts. Honestly, I’ve never experienced such a hard racing day with a total elevation of 4800 meters! This is my first Tirreno-Adriatico and day by day I am getting new experience. This is good for my future. The team worked very well today, especially on the final climb. I felt quite good, so with 5 km to go I decided to attack. I think, it was a good move, but later I’ve got cramps and was forced to drop from the leading group. With the help of Tanel Kangert I did my best to finish as high as possible. Yeah, anyway, I am happy with my attack and with the way we did this stage, - said Miguel Angel Lopez.
Astana Team led out the peloton into the final climb in Sarnano. Firstly, Andriy Grivko and Dario Cataldo and later Davide Villella and Tanel Kangert did a fantastic job in front of the race, showing the high level of the team.
With around 5 km to go it was Miguel Angel Lopez, who launched a powerful attack, later followed by Rafal Majka, Fabio Aru and Ben Hermans.
With 1,5 km to go Miguel Angel Lopez step down from the leading group and, finally, finished 22nd, 1 minute 3 seconds behind the stage winner Mikel Landa. Tanel Kangert, who supported Astana captain in the final, finished just ahead of him at 21st position. Also, Alexey Lutsenko was close with his 24th place.
Italian Damiano Caruso became the new overall leader of the race. Miguel Angel Lopez moved up to 19th place, 2 minutes 2 seconds behind the leader.
Stage 5 of the Tirreno-Adriatico with the finish in Filottrano will be dedicated to Michele Scarponi. It will be another hard stage of the race with many short and steep climbs, including the triple pass of the Muro di Filittrano.
