A few Astana riders were always presented in the front, but anyway, team’s work allowed Miguel Angel Lopez to come back in the main group and to finish safely with the same time as all other GC favorites.
- There was some nervous in the peloton and together with the wind and increased speed it created the split in the group. But, finally, it did not impact the race. Our team did a good job, protecting Miguel Angel Lopez and helping him to come back to the leading group. He had a small crash earlier in the stage, but without serious consequences. So, one more flat stage ahead and later we will have two decisive days – an individual time trial and final climbing stage. The ITT is the place where it would be hard to resist against the big TT specialists, so, for the moment we are motivated to fight for a stage win on Sunday. But, of course, we will do our maximum in every stage, - said sports director Dmitri Sedoun.
In the final, there was another bunch sprint, this time won by the Italian Elia Viviani, who outsprinted Danny Van Poppel and Pascal Achermann. Riccardo Minali was 18th.
Viviani became the new overall leader of the race, while Riccardo Minali holds 19th position.
Stage 3 of the Abu Dhabi Tour will be held tomorrow: 133 km from Nation Towers to Big Flag.
