Tour of Guangxi. Stage 4. Huge crash stops Astana riders

A serious crash in the first part of the peloton with just 4 km to the finish line cut almost all Astana riders from the front, leaving team’s leader Jakob Fuglsang without any chance to fight for a good result at the queen’s mountain stage of the Tour of Guangxi.

A few riders crashed out not far from the bottom of the final climb to Mashan Nongla Scenic Spot, creating a big crash in the peloton. Among the riders, who fell down, were Astana’s Andriy Grivko and Dario Cataldo. Fortunately, both escaped too serious injures and finished the stage.

Due to the crash, Astana leader Jakob Fuglsang was forced to stop for some time. Later, he was trying to bridge to the leading group with support of Daniil Fominykh, who remained in front, but it was impossible with only few kilometers to the finish.

Finally, Fuglsang finished 30th, 1 minute 27 seconds behind stage winner and new overall leader Tim Wellens. The Dutch Bauke Mollema and Irish rider Nicolas Roche completed the daily podium with second and third places, respectively.

The fourth stage of the Tour of Guangxi has started in the province capital Nanning and finished in the mountains of Mashan atop Nongla Scenic Area. The dinstance of 151 km has ended with a 3-km climb with an average of 7,7%.

Tomorrow will be held the longest stage of the race – 212,2 km from Liuzhou to Guilin.
