Due to left leg and knee injury and long period of recovery, Lopez has opened his season in June in Switzerland, when he took part in the GP du canton d’Argovie and the Tour de Suisse. However, despite this fact, the last three months on the road became quite successful for a young Colombian. In July, Lopez won the queen’s stage at the Tour of Austria, where he reached the final overall podium with the third place. Later, Miguel Angel showed his climbing abilities at the Vuelta a Burgos, where he won another mountain stage, missing just a little to get another GC podium.
Lopez spent a fantastic race at the Vuelta a España: he won two hard mountain stages and took 8th place in the final general classification of the Spanish Grand Tour.
- Of course, for Miguel Angel it was a tough season, which he had to start only in the summer. But, even in these three months he was able to show his great climbing talent. I think, there is no any doubt, Lopez proved his big potential in the Grand Tours too. He has a great future ahead of him. Indeed, the season was short, but very intense. What why after the Vuelta we decided to give him some time for rest and regain forces at home. Now, Lopez has a chance not only for rest, but also to decide some other questions, which could help him in future. For example, he has time to think and to solve the question about living in Europe during the racing season. By my opinion, this is very important. Meanwhile, after a vacation we will start to make our plans for the next year. I am sure, in 2018 Miguel Angel will be able to do a big step ahead, - said Astana ProTeam sports manager Dmitriy Fofonov.
