Despite of a number of attacks, also from the side of Astana ProTeam riders, the fifth stage ended with a bunch sprint won by German rider Max Walscheid. Second place took the current overall leader Mads Pedersen, while the daily podium was completed by Michael Carbel Svendgaard. Astana’s leader Michael Valgren finished 5th.
- Today, we tried to play our cards using in the race a few different tactics. We controlled the peloton, tried to attack, provided a very good support to Michael in the end. Matti Breschel did a strong race, making a powerful attack. But, honestly, there were not too many places for a real decisive attack, which could change something in the classification. However, I think, we could be really happy with second place of Valgren in GC – this is a nice result, a good reward to the entire team after a tough week here at the Tour of Denmark. Besides, our riders, who are going to take part in the upcoming world championships, end this race in a very good form, so this is the most important thing, - said sports director Lars Michaelsen.
Stage 5 of the race (Ebeltoft – Aarhus, 198 km) had not any serious impact over the general classification. Thus, the winner of the 2017 Tour of Denmark became the Danish champion Mads Pedersen. Michael Valgren is second, +0.15, U23 European champion Casper Pedersen is third, +0.46.
