After a few rainy days, today’s race passed in quite good and even warm weather. In the first kilometers of the distance a break of 4 riders went away to lead the most part of the race. Anyway, the peloton controlled well the leaders and neutralized them closer to the final.
At the last two laps, there were some attacks from the main group, one of it even split the peloton in two parts. However, later the group came back together for last 12 km. With more or less 9 km to go it was Astana’s Andriy Grivko who launched an attack. Unfortunately, it was stopped by a crash at a corner on the downhill. Hopefully, Grivko did not get any serious injury.
In the final, the race was decided in the powerful uphill sprint won by World champion Peter Sagan, who outsprinted Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet and Michael Matthews. Oscar Gatto became the best Astana performer with 24th position.
- We were not among the first contenders here, but anyway we tried to do a good race and to reach a Top-10. Oscar Gatto was close in the final and missed just a little. For many riders from this roster this was the first race after a quite long break, so I think, the guys did it well. Jakob Fuglsang did more than half of the distance, he is coming back step by step after his crash in August. We have GP de Montréal on this Sunday, so, we are looking forward to it, - said sports manager Dmitriy Fofonov.
