The eighth stage of La Vuelta 2017 offered a good show with the Astana Pro Team guys protagonists all day long.
Few km after the start the breakaway took a good advantage and in it there were the Belgian Laurens De Vreese and the Russian Sergei Chernetckii.
The gap of the bunch was never enormous but both De Vreese and Chernetckii did a good job at the front to keep a significant advantage until the last climb.
Just a couple km before the start of the Xorret de Catí, was the Belgian De Vreese to attack with another rider.
Unfortunately there were a couple a very strong climbers at the front and they didn’t get much advantage.
From behind, the GC guys were challenging to keep the best position at the beginning of the last climb.
After a good fight, our captain Fabio Aru concluded among the with most of the GC contenders but the Leader and Contador, that finished 16 seconds earlier.
Someone lost the wheels in the Xorret de Catí and so Aru recovered two position in the GC and now he is 6th at 1:06 from the Red Jersey.
Good performance even by the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez that ended 11 seconds behind Aru.
The stage has been won by the French Julian Alaphilippe while Aru was 17th.
“I think it was a good day for us with Aru solid and recovering positions in the GC – said the sport director Dmitriy Sedoun – the two generous guys, De Vreese and Chernetckii all day long in the break, and also with Miguel Angel Lopez who concluded the stage just 11 seconds after Aru.”
“Everything is going on how we thought it could have been – concluded Sedoun – tomorrow there will be another important stage and more will come in the next two weeks…”.
Tomorrow, stage nine of La Vuelta 2017, Orihuela – Cumbre del Sol, 174 km with the uphill finish: for sure it will be a stage where the GC guys could fight, even more in reason of the fact that it will be the last stage before the first rest day.
