The third stage of La Vuelta 2017 ended this afternoon in Andorra La Vella after 158 km and 3000 meters of positive drop and the selection among the GC contenders happened as prevented.
In the last climb to the Alto de La Comella, the selection was brutal with the British Froome and the Colombian Chaves at the attack with our Fabio Aru following and catching back them before the end of the climb, with the French Bardet on his back wheel.
Then after the descent some guys that were distanced at the top of the climb, regained the front of the race and at least the Italian Nibali anticipated the sprint.
Fabio Aru was 6th on the finish line and now he is 7th in the GC at 38 seconds from the new GC Leader, the British, Christopher Froome.
Thanks to the good performance by the Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez and the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez, the Astana Pro Team is now 3rd in the Teams Classification at 1:56 from the first, the Australian Orica – Scott.
“To be honest I prefer continuing to live day by day because after the Tour de France I’ve recovered and I didn’t race so I cannot know what could be the reaction of my body in these first days of the Vuelta – commented Aru after the stage – I prefer to be careful and find out how I feel, also as a consequence of the racing season I have had, preparing the Giro, then riding the Tour and now here at the Vuelta… but, day by day, step by step, I will wait for important feedback.”
Tomorrow, fourth stage of La Vuelta 2017 from Escaldes-Engordany to Tarragona (198.2 km) with the only Moutanin Prize on the Alto de Beltall at 69 km to the finish line: it should be a good one for the breakaway.
